Arrest in encampment blaze near Novato Skatepark 

(KRON) — A 63-year-old woman is in custody after she allegedly set her own encampment on fire behind the Novato Skatepark overnight, said Novato police.

“Officers found an encampment fully engulfed in flames,” said police in a social media post. “The fire had spread to nearby brush but was quickly contained and extinguished by the Novato Fire Protection District, preventing further damage to the surrounding area.”

The suspect, identified as Jamee Newkirk, stayed at the scene and worked with investigators, according to police.

There were no injuries reported in the incident.

Newkirk was booked into the Marin County Jail where she faces a felony charge of recklessly causing a fire on forest land.

“The Novato Police Department reminds the community that open flames in unsafe conditions can pose serious risks to life, property, and the environment,” added police.
