‘Arctic front' to bring sub-zero wind chills to Chicago area late Sunday

Periods of fluffy snowfall Sunday will be followed by an “arctic front” bringing sub-zero wind chills to the Chicago area through the start of next week, according to the National Weather Service.

“An arctic front will bring bitter cold temperatures and sub-zero wind chills Sunday night through Monday,” NWS said in a post on social media Saturday.

With a high near 20 degrees, snow is likely to fall throughout the day Sunday, according to NWS.

Less than half an inch of snow is expected to accumulate throughout the day Sunday, however, bitter cold temperatures could mean the NFC Divisional Round game between the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field on Sunday evening could be one of the coldest playoff games in Chicago football history.

Windchills as low as the negative teens are possible Sunday night, with blustery winds blowing between 15 and 35 miles an hour. New snow accumulation of less than 1 inch is possible overnight, NWS predicted.

The bitter cold will continue Monday, with a high near 11 degrees — though wind chill values could be as low as 16 degrees below zero.

Winds as high as 30 miles per hour are also expected Monday.
