Along 4 the Hike: Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area

MIDDLEBURY, N.Y. (WIVB) — This week’s hike is at the Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area in Middlebury, Wyoming County. It’s 2,500 acres are managed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The former farmland was abandoned in the 1920s and ’30s because of the poor soil and elevation. The trails are challenging as you go up steep hills and then back down into deep valleys.

Trail 6 features about 625 feet of elevation gain in just three miles. Some of the trails are overgrown in spots, so pants are a good idea. There is a nice payoff at the end of Trail 6: an overlook at the top of Page Hill that offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills of northern Wyoming County.

Address: West Middlebury Road, Dale, N.Y. 14039
Distance from Buffalo: 44 miles
Parking: Free in several lots. See a map here.
Difficulty: Difficult according to the Western New York Hiking Challenge, primarily because of elevation.
