Albany International Airport unveils new kids play area

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Three milestones in a $100 million modernization project at Albany International Airport have been completed. The airport now has a children’s play area, a business center, and a multi-sensory room for travelers.

Funded partially through Governor Kathy Hochul’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, the finished work is part of a modernization effort that represents economic viability in the Capital Region. Hochul said on Thursday that the new spaces in the airport mark a transformative moment for the entire region.

“This is just the beginning of our ambitious vision to modernize this critical Capital Region gateway, and it doesn’t stop here,” Hochul said. “We are making critical investments to significantly enhance facilities across upstate New York, providing travelers with an unrivaled 21st century travel experience.”

In the new business center, there’s a conference room, open meeting spaces, a reception desk, and private focus rooms. The children’s play area, named Adirondack Imaginarium, allows kids to participate in educational hands-on play and art.

Next door to the Adirondack Imaginarium is the new sensory room, providing travelers with a calming environment. The room features gentle lighting and soothing activities for those preparing to depart from the Capital Region.

“Today’s milestone at Albany International Airport highlights the importance of Governor Hochul’s strategic investment in upstate infrastructure, providing immediate benefits to travelers while laying the foundation for continued enhancements at the Airport,” New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said. “Here and across the state, the Governor’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition is enhancing the passenger experience and lifting regional and statewide economies to new heights.”

The $100 million project will continue through the beginning of 2027 with more changes on the way. The airport has already begun upgrading the ticket area, departure hall, and making room for more retail space.
