A new place in Philly to watch and support women's sports

Women athletes will be on the TV screens and the clientele will be safe to share their love of women’s sports. Marsha’s officially opened Friday, Sept. 19, at 430 South Street in Philadelphia.

Located in the Queen Village neighborhood, guests will be able to enjoy the vibrant community while having a place where women, the LGBTQ+ community and all sports fans can come together.

“I really only watch women’s sports so this was hugely important to me,” Ivana Marshall, of Greys Ferry said. “I was in sports ever since I was a child: Gymnastics, track, athletics has been a huge part of my identity.”

The business is named after Marsha P. Johnson, one of the most prominent gay rights activists in American history.

Philadelphia native, Chivonn Anderson, opened the business as a deeply personal mission to offer a sense of joy and community to others.

Anderson told NBC10 that she’s been in the industry for 25 years and never worked in an environment where there was a focus on women’s sports.

“I’m excited,” She said.

She said that Marsha’s is taking the first shot at redefining sports culture.

It’s got everything you’d expect to see in a bar including TVs, hometown pride, but customers said that it just feels different.

“It’s just like awesome to see a place where we can see women’s sports. That’s usually not what its about,” Erin Fulmore, of Roxborough, said.

The opening of Marsha’s comes as momentum builds for women’s sports in Philadelphia with a WNBA team set to arrive in the city in 2030.

“We’re building a fanbase for them four years before they step on the court,” Anderson said.

While the bar primarily focuses on women’s sports, you can catch just about every Philadelphia sports team like the Phillies and the Eagles on the big screens.
