One killed on 215 Freeway in Riverside, causing backup for hours

At least one person was killed in a vehicle collision in Riverside on the Riverside (215) Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

CHP officers responded at approximately 12:20 a.m. Wednesday to the southbound freeway and Central Avenue where they found the collision and the victim in the number one lane of the freeway, a CHP spokesman said.

The victim, whose name, age and gender were not immediately known, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP closed all lanes of the southbound freeway while they investigated the cause of the crash. The freeway remained closed for several hours as freeway sweepers worked to clean up debris spread across the freeway lanes.

The lanes opened back up by late Wednesday morning.
