Indiana Toll Road shut down after pileup crash involving around 29 vehicles

A pileup crash involving around 29 vehicles in heavy whiteout conditions prompted the closure of eastbound lanes on the Indiana Toll Road Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Around 3:51 p.m., the area approximately two miles east of Elkhart, Indiana on I-80 experienced “heavy, blowing snow causing extremely low visibility,” Indiana State Police said. During that time, a “series of crashes” occurred on the Toll Road.

A preliminary count of vehicles involved in the crash tallied 29, authorities said, including several semi-trucks.

Several injuries were reported but authorities did not immediately provide any additional information on the extent of those injuries.

The crash and emergency response is blocking all eastbound lanes, authorities said. Traffic is being diverted at the Mishawaka exit (MM-83) and delays are expected.

The crash occurred near Elkhart Municipal Airport, just south of the Michigan and Indiana border.

National Weather Service warned of lake effect snow with localized whiteout conditions prompting dangerous travel conditions along the southeastern shore of Lake Michigan Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.

No additional information was immediately available.
