It may be the middle of January, but some people are already thinking about farmer’s markets, and one market will soon have a remarkable new space for its customers.
Green City Market, which is a nonprofit and one of the city’s largest markets, now has a permanent indoor home that can be used year-round.
The new building is located at 2457 W. Montrose Avenue in the North Center neighborhood.
“This location gives farmers a place to sell their products year-round,” said CEO Letisha Steele. “It is actually surprising when you see how much they (farmers) have to sell in Winter months, be it apples, greens, carrots, potatoes – they also have things they processed, beans that they dried. It will also serve as a place to learn about food and where it comes from. A place to bring community in to have conversations about what does food sustainability look like?”
The purchase of the building was made possible by the late Abby Mandel, an acclaimed author and chef who founded the market back in 1999.
“When she passed in 2008, she left a trust for the purchase of a forever building for Green City Market. So, it has been in the works for a while, and we finally found a home. We hope to open by mid Spring. We have to do a bit of a build out, and we still need to navigate things for our capital campaign,” Steele said.
Green City Market’s Avondale market is open on Saturdays, with those hours continuing through the end of March. The outdoor locations in Lincoln Park and West Loop will continue with a normal schedule, according to organizers.
