Bodycam video shows the moments a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy shot at an armed carjacking suspect as he was allegedly fleeing authorities.
It happened on Nov. 3, when authorities responded to a carjacking that occurred in the area of Southwest 279th Street and Southwest 127th Avenue at around 8:54 p.m.
Authorities said that a woman was sitting in her black Chevrolet Tahoe when she was approached by three masked suspects. She ran to a nearby business, and the suspects took off in her car.
The sheriff’s office said deputies found the vehicle in the area of Southeast 25th Avenue and Southwest 28th Drive, a residential area in Homestead, before the subjects ditched the car and ran away.
Bodycam video released in January shows the deputy chasing after the suspects behind neighborhood homes, yelling “Let me see your hands, let me see your hands!”
Then, he fires one shot and a suspect can be seen on the ground inside a backyard.
“Sir, sir, you shot me,” the man, identified by authorities as 18-year-old Stephan Jones, says on the floor several times.
“I’ve got one here in the backyard,” the deputy radios as he gets closer. Then, video shows him enter the backyard where the suspect is.
“Where you shot?” he asks.
“Ow, my arm!” the teen replies.
“Don’t f—— move,” the deputy says.
“Sir you shot me,” the teen says. “Sir, can you call the ambulance?”
“I’m gonna call the ambulance,” the deputy says before he radios for fire rescue.
According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was forced to fire when Jones pointed an assault rifle at him. That part is not clearly seen on video, but later footage does show an assault rifle on the grass near the suspect.
The deputies at the scene treated Jones with a tourniquet and waited for fire rescue to arrive, authorities said. The suspect was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Two other suspects were later taken into custody: 18-year-old Tyquawn Davis and a 16-year-old.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
“We recognize that incidents of this nature raise questions and concerns within our community, and I believe the public has the right to see critical incidents involving law enforcement. While a thorough investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still underway, releasing this footage ensures everyone sees the sequence of events as they unfolded,” the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said. “Regardless of the outcome, my commitment is clear, to be transparent with our community, to hold ourselves to the highest standards, and to continue working every day to earn and maintain your trust.”
