The former chief financial officer of a shuttered Philadelphia charter school was arrested after being charged with alleged embezzlement, according to the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
Darnell Smith, 52, is accused of embezzling more than $300,000 from Khepera Charter School while he was working as the school’s Chief Financial Officer between 2015 and 2017, officials said.
Smith was indicted in July of 2020 and then arrested on Jan. 9, 2026, according to officials.
Khepera Charter School was a Philadelphia-based charter school that closed after its charter status was revoked in 2018.
