Cody Bellinger remains one of the top MLB free agents on the market, but a surprising team may have checked in on his status.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Chicago Cubs “checked in” on one of their former players in recent days.
Heyman also reports that the Mets, Dodgers and Giants have also been looking into whether to sign Bellinger to a free agent deal.
Most MLB insiders still believe that Bellinger is a top target of the New York Yankees, including The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, who described the outfielder as the team’s “top priority.”
Bellinger had an outstanding season with the Yankees in 2025, with 29 home runs and 98 RBI’s, slashing .272/.334/.480.
Prior to that, he had spent the previous two seasons with the Cubs, with 26 home runs and 97 RBI’s in the 2023 season. His production slipped a bit in the 2024 campaign as he had 18 home runs and 78 RBI’s, and the Cubs traded him for Cody Poteet following the season.
The Cubs have focused mainly on bullpen help during the offseason, but they have been exploring adding some offensive help. In addition to Bellinger, the Cubs have been linked to former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette and former Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, among others.
