Denver Post reporter Kyle Newman on Monday was named the 2025 Colorado Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association.

The honor is awarded annually in each state and voted upon by peers. Newman joined The Post in 2016 as its prep sports editor but has become a jack-of-all-trades, covering a bevy of topics from the Rockies and the Avs to Colorado’s new professional women’s soccer team to Olympic athletes and stories about the local community.
“Kyle is incredibly versatile, tireless, and hardworking,” The Post’s Rockies beat writer Patrick Saunders said. “He can write anything from a high school football game to an in-depth enterprise story.
“Kyle has emerged as a huge part of the Denver Post sports department, and this award is long overdue.”
Newman’s notable stories from 2025 include: a comprehensive dive into how the Broncos stadium move would impact the Sun Valley neighborhood; a look at how a Vietnam War vet and pitcher found redemption and purpose after decades of drug addiction; a story about a man who skied a record 2,993 straight days, and his life after having to give up the slopes; a boulderer’s return to climbing after a catastrophic electrocution; and a report on one of the state’s top preps programs facing turmoil and a “leadership crisis” following its football coach’s resignation.
This is the 51st time a Denver Post reporter or columnist has won the NSMA’s sportswriter of the year award since it was first awarded in 1959, and it’s the 16th time in the last 18 years.
Broncos’ and KOA radio’s Dave Logan was named the Colorado sportscaster of the year for the fifth time. ESPN/ABC’s Sean McDonough was named the national sportscaster of the year, and Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger earned the national sportswriter of the year honor.
