Man charged with murder in fatal Boston hit-and-run

A Boston man has been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly hitting and killing both a pedestrian and a dog Saturday morning at Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

Police responded to the intersection of Commonwealth and Hereford Street around 8:09 a.m. At the scene, Boston Emergency Medical Services treated the victim, 79-year-old John Axelrod, who was later transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect allegedly drove into the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and intentionally struck Axelrod while he was walking his dog, then fled, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Boston Police obtained the license and registration for the vehicle allegedly involved in the incident, which Brookline Police then located, unoccupied.

Officers from Boston and Brookline, working with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, were then able to find and arrest 42-year-old William Haney.

Haney faces charges of murder and animal cruelty and is expected to be arraigned at Central Boston Municipal Court on Monday.
