Mud and debris flow damages property in Wrightwood

Some families in San Bernardino County were forced to spend Christmas Day at an emergency shelter after a massive mud and debris flow inundated their neighborhoods following Wednesday’s rain.

When it stopped raining for a few hours Thursday morning, crews from the San Bernardino County Fire Department rushed to evacuate some of the people in the affected areas, including a neighborhood on State Route 138 off the 15 Freeway.

Video from the fire department showed a thick layer of mud surrounding some homes in a Wrightwood community. At least one car was completely submerged in the mudflow.

Officials said more than 120 first responders worked overnight on Christmas Eve to bring people to safety.

No one was seriously injured, the fire department said. One child was taken to a hospital out of precaution.
