A large sink hole opened up in the middle of a road on Chicago’s South Side during the morning rush hour Monday.
Footage of the scene showed crews working on a large section of collapsed pavement at 111th Street and Whipple.
Both directions of 111th Street were shut down between Albany and Sacramento Avenues due to the collapse.
The Chicago Transit Authority reported the #112 Vincennes/111th buses were being rerouted due to “street blockage near 111th and Whipple.”
It was not immediately clear how long repairs could take and how long closures would last.
The Department of Water Management said it was called to the scene around 1 a.m. for a water main break in the area.
“Crews are on scene and will continue to work throughout the day until water is restored,” the department said.
Six properties were impacted by the shutdown and the department warned water is expected to be shut off “all day until its repaired.”
“DWM is working at all practicable speed to finish the work,” the department said.
The broken main is from 1920, officials said.
