An officer was hospitalized Wednesday night after Riverside police say a firearm was discharged during an altercation.
The incident happened while the Riverside police officer was responding to a mental health emergency around 6:45 p.m. in the area of University Avenue and Dwight Avenue.
During the response, the officer was involved in a physical altercation with the suspect, according to police. At one point in the altercation between the two, a firearm went off.
The officer sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The person involved in the altercation was in police custody and was also transported to a hospital. The extent of their injuries is unclear.
Riverside police are urging the public to avoid the area as the investigation is underway.
