Going where the stories are

It’s been less than a year since I started at MinnPost, but what a time it’s been! Here are some highlights of my time on the job, none of which would have been possible without the support of readers like you.

I’ve had the opportunity to spend long days (and occasional nights) at our state Capitol, keeping track of what your representatives are debating, legislating and budgeting for during a painfully unproductive legislative session, and then a whirlwind special session that saw lawmakers try to balance the biennial budget.

As Minnesota’s economy began to sag under the weight of high prices, tariffs and the federal shutdown, I was fortunate enough to speak to Minnesotans across the income spectrum, from those struggling to put food on the table when SNAP benefits were suspended, to those wondering how they would make rent, to those who were comfortable and able to ride out the tougher times.

And when Minnesota became ground zero for the next phase of the federal immigration crackdown I was incredibly grateful when I was welcomed into coffee houses, restaurants and barber shops, even by immigrants who feared that speaking to me on the record would impact their lives and their livelihoods.

All of that is to say that MinnPost’s reporters go where the stories are, and we are able to do so because we are trusted by the experts we rely on for their analysis, by the state officials we ask for clarification, and above all by the people and the communities we cover as humans and Minnesotans first and foremost. We do this to bring the most honest, most nuanced, most human version of the story to our audience. We do that because it is our job, and because we know that our readers deserve it.

Thank you for your support this year, and, we hope, into the future.

P.S. The fundraising team told me that we’re already 30% of the way to our $120,000 goal. Your donation right now will help us stay on track to meet our goal by December 31.
