Police increasing security at synagogues in Miami Beach after deadly mass shooting in Australia

Following a mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at a beach in Australia on Sunday, which officials are deeming an antisemitic attack, police in Miami Beach are increasing their security presence at key locations.

Hundreds had gathered for an event at Bondi Beach called Chanukah by the Sea, which was celebrating the start of the Hanukkah Jewish festival.

Eleven people were killed, including one gunman, by police, while a second gunman was taken into custody in critical condition.

As a result of the shooting, Miami Police posted on their Instagram that they are increasing their presence at synagogues, schools and other key locations.

Miami Beach Police said there are currently no credible threats to the community.

Officials in Cooper City also reacted to the mass shooting and released a statement that reads as follows:

“We are shocked by the events that unfolded in Australia today. We are praying for Bondi and for the lives lost, the terror endured, the families affected, and the entire Jewish community. In light of today’s event in Australia, Chabad of Southwest Broward are working with law enforcement and city officials on ensuring safety during this celebratory event.”

There will be a community-wide Menorah lighting in Cooper City to celebrate the First Night of Chanukah at 4 p.m. at Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex, 10300 Stirling Road.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released the following statement:

“I am devastated by the attack targeting the Jewish community at Bondi Beach in Australia during the first night of Hanukkah. What should have been a moment of prayer and celebration was turned into an act of terror that claimed at least 15 lives.

“As someone who is Jewish, this hits close to home. When Jewish people are attacked for who they are, the impact is far-reaching. This is what antisemitism looks like. It is real, and it is growing. We will continue to coordinate with the Sheriff’s Office and our law enforcement partners to help ensure the safety of synagogues, community centers, and other places where Jewish residents gather. My heart is with the victims, their families, and everyone who came together that night in peace and faith.”
