Popular anime franchise opens first US store in Chicago suburb

Gundam, an iconic anime brand known for its plastic figurines, has opened its first United States location in suburban Rosemont.

Offering “an immersive” and “hands-on” experience for both first-time builders and fans, The Gundam Base Chicago marked its grand opening on Friday at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago, according to a news release. The 3,000-square-foot location features Exclusive GUNPLA (Gundam plastic model) kits and merchandise, a dedicated play area for competitors, exhibit displays and promotional items.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the launch of the first GUNDAM BASE in the United States. Our Chicago location will offer an exciting platform to highlight our diverse product lineup and honor the rich history and impact of the GUNDAM franchise,” John McKenzie, president and CEO of Bandai Namco Amusement America, Inc., said in a news release.

To celebrate the grand opening, a limited-time experience was set up inside the mall, steps away from the main location. The Gundam Base Pop-Up World Tour, which runs through Jan. 11, offers exclusive items, special GUNPLA displays and interactive workshops including “Build your own GUNPLA.”

While the suburban Chicago store is the first U.S. location, more than 30 other stores are in operation worldwide. The Gundam Base Chicago is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
