Police search for man who broke into high school, attempted to rob employee

Police in suburban Downers Grove are searching for a man they say broke into a high school in the area and attempted to rob a maintenance worker early Wednesday morning.

Around 1:35 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to Downers Grove North High School, located at 4436 Main Street, and discovered a man had entered the school through an unlocked window on the first floor and attempted to rob a maintenance worker.

The man approached the maintenance worker and demanded money, police said. Upon making contact with a second worker in the building, the man fled.

No weapon was displayed or inferred during the incident, according to authorities.

All exterior doors to the building were locked and secured, according to a letter from the school’s superintendent and principal. School staff worked throughout the early hours before student arrival to “sweep the building and ensure that all of our building spaces were unoccupied and secured,” the letter also mentioned.

“This incident serves as a critical reminder that it is the responsibility of every person on our team to ensure that our buildings are locked and secured at all times,” the letter said.

Police are still searching for the suspect, described as a Black male with gray facial hair who is between approximately 50 to 60 years old, standing at 5-foot-6-inches tall. He was wearing a black puffy coat, dark baseball cap, green pants, tan boots, tan gloves and a black drawstring bag.

He was last seen traveling southbound on Forest Avenue on foot, police said.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Downers Grove Police at 630-434-5600.
