Light snow, bitter cold, slippery conditions to hit Philly region this weekend

Light snow is set to hit the Philadelphia region over the weekend followed by bitter cold that will lead to slippery conditions. Here’s what you need to know.

Clipper brings snow late Saturday into Sunday

Clouds will increase across the region on Saturday, Dec. 13. Temperatures will be in the lower 40s during the day. However, late Saturday night, a fast-moving Alberta clipper will move into the area. Clippers are known for two things. They move quickly and they do not bring a lot of moisture. Even so, this one should be just strong enough to deliver a widespread, accumulating snowfall as we head into Sunday.

A light wintry mix is expected to begin late Saturday night, quickly becoming all snow and continuing through much of Sunday morning.

As it stands right now, the preliminary data shows our area is in line for about 2 to 3 inches of fluffy accumulation. It is not a big storm, but it will be enough to coat everything before you wake up.

Cold temperatures, slippery conditions after the snow

By Sunday afternoon, the snow is gone, but in the wake of the clipper, frigid air will pour in behind the system and temperatures will drop through the afternoon and into Sunday night.

Any snow left on driveways, sidewalks, or roads that is not shoveled or brushed away will freeze solid and turn slippery quickly. The cold may also play a big role for the Eagles game Sunday afternoon.

Gusty winds will make it feel like it is in the teens during the game. Then Monday morning, temperatures will drop into the teens as well for a frigid start to the work week.

The path the clipper takes is all important, so Sunday’s snow totals may shift as we fine-tune the forecast heading into the weekend. But confidence is growing that we will wake up to a fresh layer of powder early Sunday morning.
