How to protect yourself from scammers pretending to be from Pa. sheriff's office

A warning about a familiar scam that is making its rounds.

The Lehigh County Sheriff’s Office says that residents have been reporting that they are getting phone calls from people who claim to be deputies or detectives with the office, but they’re just scammers.

These scammers are trying to get your money or personal information by telling residents that they owe for outstanding fines, for missing jury duty or ignoring a subpoena, officials explained.

Officials want to warn everyone to avoid falling for these scams.

The first thing to know is that the sheriff’s office does not ask residents to pay fines over the phone.

A second red flag to be aware of is if the caller is using scare tactics, like a sense of urgency, to hand over your money or share personal information.

If the caller tells you to not hang up the phone or to not tell anyone that you are withdrawing money, that’s another red flag.

If you think you may have fallen victim for a scam like this, or are targeted in a scam of this nature, please call the Lehigh County Sheriff’s Office at 610-782-3175 or the Lehigh County Communications Center at 610-437-5252.
