Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has gifted Cal State University, Northridge (CSUN) with a $63 million donation, the school announced Tuesday.
This was Scott’s second donation to CSUN after her initial gift of $40 million in 2021.
With her overall donation amount exceeding $103 million, Scott’s investment into CSUN has become one of the largest gifts to any university. It also is the largest donation CSUN has received in its 67-year history.
“We are deeply honored by MacKenzie Scott’s continued and increased confidence in our work,” said CSUN President Erika D. Beck. “This extraordinary support enables us to strengthen the systems and resources that help our students thrive.”
Scott also wrote an essay on her website Tuesday, revealing that she has donated $7.1 billion to nonprofits in 2015, a significant increase in her annual giving.
“This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year,” she said.
Scott said she donated $2.6 billion 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023.
Scott’s donations have captured the attention of nonprofits and other charitable funders because they come with no strings attached and are often very large compared to the annual budgets of the recipient organizations. Forbes estimates Scott’s net worth at $33 billion, most of which comes from Amazon shares she received after her 2019 divorce from company founder Jeff Bezos.
