The Browns plan for their third different quarterback to be the last one they use this season.
Rookie Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback the rest of the year, including Sunday at Soldier Field, coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday.
Sanders earned the extended opportunity by improving in each of his three starts this year, Stefanski said. He played his best game of the season, albeit in a loss against a two-win Titans team, on Sunday. He went 23-for-42 for 364 yards, three touchdowns, one interception and a 97.7 passer rating.
“I feel good about where his development is heading,” Stefanski said. “He knows there are always going to be plays that he can be better and those type of things, but he’s very intentional about getting better each and every game he’s out there.”
The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, he starred at Colorado while playing under his father. Sanders became the most notorious quarterback in this year’s draft after he dropped all the way to Round 5. The Browns drafted him and eventually traded Kenny Pickett to the Raiders and Joe Flacco to the Bengals. Sanders replaced Dillon Gabriel, a rookie drafted in Round 3, last month.
“They’re a team now that has named their starting quarterback and they’re starting to push the ball downfield more … ” Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson said. “I feel like he’s a very solid quarterback and he’s got a lot of potential. “
