Watch: Kīlauea volcano lava fountain buries camera on crater rim

Dramatic video of Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii captured the moment a USGS camera was buried in a spectacular lava fountain.

The camera, located about 2,000 feet away from the volcano vent, captured the advancing lava fountain as it was swallowed up in the cloud of dirt and rocks. The camera was set up in a closed area of the park located on the south rim of Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kīlauea volcano in mid-2025.

The camera was buried in tephra, rock fragments ejected into the air Saturday during an eruption, from what the USGS said was an inclined lava fountain between 9:55 and 9:57 a.m. HST.

The USGS reported more than 12 hours of sustained lava fountains and eruptions on Saturday from the volcano on the southeastern shore of Hawaii Island.

The agency operates a network of cameras directed at Kilauea, some located on at the summit and others offering a more expansive view.
