The family of a man shot on Interstate 95 in South Florida two weeks ago wants justice as investigators are still searching for the shooter.
The Florida Highway Patrol called the shooting a case of road rage and issued a be on the lookout for a black Chevrolet after the Nov. 20 shooting.
NBC6 spoke with Lucy, who says her uncle David is fighting to stay alive nearly two weeks after someone shot him on I-95 near Ives Dairy Road in Hallandale Beach. The family is praying for a miracle.
“It’s a mixture of sadness and anger,” Lucy said. “This is a phone call no one expects to get.”
Troopers said the suspect was driving the black Chevrolet. Lucy and the rest of David’s family don’t want to show their face on camera because FHP has not found the shooter.
“We were extremely scared, we don’t know if the person got the tag, they can show up any moment anywhere,” Lucy said.
The bullet is still lodged in David’s spine, the family said, and doctors had to remove one of his lungs because of the bullet’s fragments.
The family said there were a couple of times when he almost didn’t make it. For about two weeks now, they haven’t left his side, including his wife and daughters.
“He works like an animal to provide for his family, and this is basically all we got,” Lucy said.
While the family is distraught, they’re trying to remain hopeful. Lucy said there was someone on the interstate who stopped to help her uncle after someone shot him.
“The wife was a nurse, and she’s the one who was the first on the scene putting pressure, and we believe she’s the one who saved his life,” Lucy said. “We are so grateful, it’s a godsend that she was even a nurse.”
The family wants answers, and they want justice.
“We want you to turn yourself in, we’re not only angry but more so distraught,” Lucy said. “He’s fighting for his life in the ICU, he has kids and a family.”
There is a GoFundMe for the family.
