Man rescues dog abandoned in Sweetwater after driver left him behind in viral video

Viral video appears to show the heart-wrenching moments a dog is let out of a car before the driver pulls off, apparently abandoning the animal, in a Sweetwater neighborhood.

The community outrage has been swift, but fortunately for the pup, it seems his luck has turned around.

In Ring video shared on Instagram by Only in Dade, a sedan can be seen stopping on a street before a woman gets out of the driver’s seat. She appears to let the dog out, who bounds around the vehicle wagging its tail.

Then, she gets back in the driver’s seat and starts to pull away. The dog circles the car, jumps up on the closed doors and almost the hood to no avail. The vehicle drives off.

One of the thousands of people who saw the video was Pastor Garcilazo.

He told NBC6 exclusively that was near the area and decided to go see if he could find the pup—a large goldendoodle—after seeing the video. Sure enough, he did.

And then, he took him home.

“He was very energetic, he was around the place, like running around in circles,” Garcilazo said. “The people that posted the video, when I got there, they told me that the person was crying a lot, that that’s not shown in the video… but I mean at the end of the day, she left him just like that. There are ways to do things like that and that’s not one of them, you know.”

Garcilazo said the dog’s fur was very matted, and so he took him to the groomer, who said she’d never worked on a case that severe.

Garcilazo said he’s had people reach out to offer help, and that he will check if the dog is chipped.

But after a whole day with the pup, he said he intends to keep him. For now, he’s calling him Leo.

Sweetwater Police told NBC6 that Animal Services is investigating the case.
