Poised to be sworn in this January, Bryan Calvo will become the youngest mayor in Hialeah’s history, leading the city he has called home his entire life. Born and raised in Hialeah, he attended public school, graduating as valedictorian from Westland Hialeah Senior High.
From an early age, Mr. Calvo felt a call to public service, earning numerous awards and recognitions for his academic achievements, leadership and community involvement, including more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work.
Mr. Calvo earned a full-ride scholarship to Harvard University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in government and a language citation in Italian. While at Harvard, Mr. Calvo was a senior staffer for the Harvard Model Congress, an active member of the Institute of Politics, and president of the Harvard Candela Salsa Team.
In the summer of 2018, Mr. Calvo was selected for the White House Internship Program under President Trump. There, he gained first-hand insight into the challenges facing cities across the country, working directly with elected officials to help craft policies to address them. He also had the opportunity to meet and learn from key officials, including the attorney general, the secretary of defense and the President.
After his White House internship, Mr. Calvo attended Florida International University College of Law, graduating in 2022 and becoming a licensed attorney in Florida. He currently practices civil litigation, focusing on complex commercial, mass tort and class-action cases.
While in law school, Mr. Calvo ran for and was elected to the Hialeah City Council, becoming the youngest elected official in Miami-Dade County.
During his tenure on the council, Mr. Calvo focused on a wide range of initiatives to improve Hialeah. He led efforts to address critical issues in the city’s 911 department, advocating for additional resources and filing a lawsuit to secure access to records needed to resolve the crisis.
He consistently opposed tax increases, worked to lower rising water costs and sponsored policies to protect renters, strengthen election integrity and expand opportunities for students to intern in local government. He also served as the city’s representative to the Miami-Dade League of Cities and the Florida League of Cities’ Land Use & Economic Development Committee.
As mayor-elect, Mr. Calvo is focused on a vision of resident-first leadership. His priorities include repealing elected officials’ pensions that were reinstated against voter wishes, cutting government waste, protecting condominium owners from fraud, combating money laundering and financial crimes, and easing the burden of taxes and water fees on residents. He emphasizes transparency, efficiency and accountability, promising a city government that serves its people rather than itself.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Calvo enjoys flying, scuba diving, spearfishing and spending time with his Bernadoodle, Ziva. He views his role as mayor as both an honor and an enormous responsibility, and says he is committed to working tirelessly to create a safer, more livable and more equitable Hialeah.
