Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue is pledging to decline the governor’s salary if he is elected.
The former healthcare executive told the Herald that he will redirect the full $224,185 annual salary somewhere else.
Minogue says the decision reflects on the “core themes of his campaign: affordability, accountability, and the expectation that leadership should set the standard.
“Massachusetts has an affordability and accountability problem. Families are cutting back while political elites keep spending without discipline. I have spent my life giving back to the community, especially in education, healthcare, and veterans’ causes, and declining the governor’s salary is another way to reflect those values,” Minogue said.
The GOP mega-donor also criticized political leaders in Massachusetts who “continue spending without discipline.”
“As a new kind of governor, I will work to make Massachusetts competitive and affordable again. Getting government costs under control will take discipline and focus; the same approach I’ve used my entire career,” he said. “I’ll bring that standard to state government. As a new kind of governor, taxpayers will have a leader focused on affordability, accountability, opportunity, and keeping communities safe.”
According to the state Comptroller’s Office, the governor’s base pay in 2024 was $224,185. The governor also receives a $65,000 annual housing allowance. That salary ranks fourth among all U.S. states, falling behind governors’ salaries paid by New York ($250,000), Pennsylvania ($245,760), and California ($224,020).
Minogue’s campaign says he will additionally decline any other allowances or pensions paid out to the governor.
The third republican to enter the gubernatorial primary when he officially announced his candidacy in late September, Minogue had previously served nearly 19 years as the Chairman, President and CEO of Abiomed — a medical device technology company under the umbrella of Johnson & Johnson since 2022.
He earned a total compensation of $12,670,000 during his last year with the company in 2022, according to the ERI Economic Research Institute. Minogue has an estimated net worth of at least $193 million, according to Gurufocus.
