Baywatch reboot to be shot in Venice Beach as part of CA film and TV tax credit program

Seventeen television productions, including a reboot of a 1990s hit series, will be receiving tax credits through California’s film and television incentive program, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced Thursday.

As “Baywatch” is among those set to be filmed in California, Los Angeles officials Thursday joined at the historic Venice Beach Lifeguard Operation Station where the series will be shot.

“Baywatch,” featuring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, was one of the most iconic, quintessentially Los Angeles shows, showcasing Southern California beaches.

The latest round of the projects that were selected for California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program will employ over 5,100 cast and crew as well as nearly 36,000 background performers, according to the governor’s office.

State officials expect the productions that will be receiving tax credits for filming in California to spend over $900 million inside California. Nearly half of the amount will go toward entertainment workers as wages while the other half will be spent on California vendors, Newsom’s office said.

“Baywatch was born in Los Angeles. I’m so glad we can bring it home again,” said Baywatch Executive Producer Matt Nix, who started working on the show when the California wildfires ravaged LA and nearly destroyed his home. “I was inspired by the heroism of the first responders who fought to save our community, and I wanted to be a part of bringing filming back to California and showing the beauty and possibility of this incredible place.”
