Police: Vehicle recovered after woman killed in hit-and-run in University City

A 48-year-old woman was struck and killed by a vehicle that fled the scene in University City early Thursday, police said.

And, in a morning update, officials said they believed they located the vehicle used in the incident.

According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the incident happened just before 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of 33rd and Market streets on Drexel University’s campus in the University City section of West Philadelphia.

At that time, Small said the woman was walking to work with three co-workers when she was struck while crossing Market Street by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle was traveling at such speed that, police said, the woman was thrown several hundred feet due to the impact.

“She was hit with such force that she was launched out of her sneakers,” said Small.

In a morning update, police identified the victim as 48-year-old Meaza Brown of South Philly.

Following the crash, the driver sped away headed towards 30th Street Station on Market Street, Small said.

“The driver of the striking vehicle did not remain on scene, did not render any aid and just fled the scene,” he said.

Brown, Small said, was pronounced at about 4:45 a.m. after being taken to a nearby hospital.

However, he said, from a description from the co-workers and surveillance cameras, police got a good description of the vehicle — a silver Chrysler 300 — including the license plate number.

At around noon on Thursday, police said, they recovered the vehicle that they believe was used in this incident near the intersection of 34th and Race streets.

However, as of about 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, no arrests have yet been made in this incident.

But, officials said, an investigation is ongoing.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
