Georgia man shot dead by police after killing teenage stepsons

A 50-year-old Georgia man was shot dead by police after allegedly killing his teenage stepsons and firing his guns at Harris County deputies.

Kelly Grigsby told officers that she fled to her neighbor’s house with her 5-year-old daughter after her husband, Eric Grigsby, threatened to kill their children Monday night in Midland, roughly 100 miles south of Atlanta.

Police responding to Kelly’s 911 call arrived around 7 p.m. to find the suspect walking around the driveway of a home with a gun in each hand, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Tuesday.

When told to drop the weapons, Grigsby took aim at the officers, who then opened fire, striking him at least once. The suspect allegedly returned with gunshots of his own, causing officers to shoot until Grigsby “was on the ground and not moving,” authorities said.

Following the shooting, law enforcement searched the home and found Grigsby’s 16-year-old stepson dead from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures on his 14-year-old stepson, who had also been shot, but he died at the scene.

Harris County Sheriff Mike Jolley said his officers responded appropriately and “did exactly as they were trained.” No deputies were wounded in the shooting.

The incident, which authorities blamed on an “ongoing domestic issue,” is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Grigsby worked as an assistant principal at Blackmon Road Middle School from 2012 to 2016, according to Georgia ABC affiliate WTVM. He held the same position at Waddell Elementary School from 2016 to 2018, the same year he was arrested for driving under the influence.
