When the Commanders needed a new kicker, they went looking for the one who beat them at the last second last month. They agreed to sign Jake Moody from the Bears’ practice squad Monday, NFL Network reported, after cutting Matt Gay.
Moody joined the Bears when the 49ers cut him after their opener and worked on their practice squad until Cairo Santos got hurt leading up to the Commanders game Oct. 13. Moody made 4 of 5 field goals that night, including a 38-yarder to win 25-24 as time expired. He also went 4-for-4 at home against the Saints the next week.
The Bears brought Moody on as a contingency plan and remained committed to Santos throughout his injury. He returned after missing two games, and Sunday against the Vikings made the winning field goal from 48 yards with no time left.
Santos, 34, has made 80% of his field goals this season, which ranks 25th in the league. He also is the most accurate kicker in the history of Soldier Field. The Bears have him signed through 2027.
