GOP Senators, Hawley back away from controversial payout bill

Republican senators, including Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley, are working to distance themselves from a controversial provision slipped into the government funding bill that ended the recent shutdown. The measure would allow them to sue the federal government for at least $500,000 for every time that their phone or data records were accessed (without notice) during the Justice Department’s Jan. 6 investigations.
