LAPD: 2 in custody after report of shots fired at downtown LA apartment complex

Two people are in custody following an investigation at an apartment complex in downtown Los Angeles after reports of shots fired early Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to the building at the 1000 block of S. Broadway after 5:30 a.m.

By 8 a.m., the LAPD announced they were on tactical alert. The Los Angeles Fire Department also arrived on the scene as a precaution.

“I thought it was fireworks so I just tried to go back to sleep and it kept happening,” Rachel Santhon, a resident of the building, said. “I still thought it was fireworks until I came outside and the SWAT team was here.”

The investigation has been going on for several hours at the building near West Olympic Boulevard and Broadway where officers are searching floor by floor.

LAPD said they were searching for any potential victims, suspects, or evidence related to the incident, LAPD said.

“It’s scary just to, like, be out here but especially if you’re in the building and you don’t know what’s going on. You can’t leave,” Connor Fries, a resident of the apartment complex, said.

Dozens of LAPD patrol vehicles were seen along the area where the investigation is happening.

LAPD said there is no active shooter and no victims have been reported. It was not clear who fired those shots.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and expect delays. No further details were immediately available.
