Illinois, Indiana school closings today as winter storm dumps snow

As the winter storm warning continues, here’s what to know:

• Six to 12 inches of snow forecast for parts of the area
• Track winter road conditions near you, with a major crash reported on DuSable Lake Shore Drive and roads closed

Dozens of schools across the Chicago area were closed or on delayed starts as a winter storm warning continued to dump snow along the lakefront, with as much as 12 inches of snow that had already fallen in some parts, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.

As of early Monday morning, snow was continuing to fall in Lake County and Kankakee Counties in Illinois, as well as portions of northwest Indiana.

In Lake County, multiple schools were closed, including in Gages Lake, Gurnee and Zion, and Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago.

In northwest Indiana, Valparaiso University Police Department posted that all campus operations and classes were suspended Monday “due to overnight snow, critical road conditions, condition blowing snow and another round of snow moving through during the day.”

In a post on Instagram, Chicago Public Schools said the district will remain open.

“Classes will be in session as scheduled Monday, November 10 for all CPS students,” the post said. “Allow extra travel time to ensure a safe and on-time arrival. Our Facilities Team will be working hard to ensure all buildings are warm and dry, and will be clearing any accumulating snow from sidewalks and parking lots to ensure all staff and students are safe.”

According to the National Weather Service, the winter storm warning was in effect for Lake and Kankakee Counties in Illinois, and Porter, Northern LaPorte and Porter Counties in Indiana until 9 a.m.

“Locally dangerous travel conditions due to lake effect snow expected,” the NWS warned. “Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches, with storm total snowfall of 4 to 8 inches east of Interstate 94 expected.”

In DuPage, Cook and Will Counties in Illinois, Kenosha County in Wisconsin and Newton and Dubois Counties in Indiana, there was a winter weather advisory until 12 p.m.

“Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches with storm total snowfall of 2 to 4 inches expected,” the NWS said, of those parts.
