A 29-year-old woman was killed and three others, including a child and infant, were injured Sunday night when another vehicle hit a patch of ice and lost control, colliding into them head-on in a north Chicago suburb, authorities said.
The crash happened just before 9 p.m. on Grand Avenue over Interstate 94 in Gurnee.
There, police said a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling westbound on Grand Avenue in the center lane when the driver attempted to change lanes.
“Due to the winter weather conditions at the time, the vehicle is believed to have struck a patch of ice, causing it to lose control, cross over the center median, and enter the eastbound lanes of traffic,” Gurnee police said in a release.
The suburban collided head-on with a 2007 Ford Focus traveling eastbound on Grand Avenue. The Focus was forced off the roadway by the collision and came to a stop in a ditch. A third vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, was struck by debris from the collision and suffered a flat tire.
The drive of the Focus, a 29-year-old woman from Evanston, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 29-year-old woman from Waukegan, who was inside the Focus, and the passenger’s 5-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter were taken to area hospitals with injuries from the crash, but their conditions were not immediately known.
The driver and passengers inside the Chevrolet were uninjured and those inside the Toyota Highlander were also not hurt.
The Major Crash Assistance Team, along with Gurnee police, are investigating the crash, which shut down Grand Avenue for hours.
The identity of the woman killed was not released as the coroner’s office worked to notify her family.
The Lake County area was under a winter storm warning, with a heavy band of snow hitting the region hard Sunday night and into Monday morning. The crash was one of several reported in connection with the wintry burst.
