Giants fire head coach Brian Daboll after blowing late lead vs. Bears

The New York Giants have fired head coach Brian Daboll one day after his team coughed up a double-digit lead over the Chicago Bears.

Multiple reports emerged Monday that the Giants had opted to fire Daboll, who won Associated Press Coach of the Year honors in his first season with the team in 2022, but has struggled since.

The team named assistant coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka as their interim head coach, according to multiple reports.

“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product,” Giants co-owner John Mara and President Steve Tisch said in a statement.

Daboll won Associated Press Coach of the Year in the 2022 season, when he went 9-7-1 with the Giants. In the three years since, he went 11-33, including a 2-8 start to this season.

That run includes Sunday’s game, with the Giants blowing a 20-10 lead in the fourth quarter as Caleb Williams threw a touchdown pass to Rome Odunze and rushed for a 17-yard touchdown within a span of just over two minutes.

According to ESPN’s Stats and Info, this is the fourth time this season the Giants have blown a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter of a game. They are just the second team since the NFL-AFL merger to achieve that feat, joining the 2004 Seattle Seahawks.

The Giants have now lost 10 consecutive road games after Sunday’s defeat, and they sit at just 2-8 on the regular season as they prepare to face the NFC North-leading Green Bay Packers on Sunday in New Jersey.

They then face two tough road games against the Lions and Patriots before finally getting a bye week in Week 14.
