Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown being extradited to Miami in attempted murder case: Police

Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown was being extradited to Miami to face an attempted murder charge in connection with a shooting outside a celebrity boxing event back in May, authorities said.

Miami Police officials confirmed Thursday that the 37-year-old Brown was being extradited from Dubai to Miami.

A public affairs officer for the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed Brown arrived from Dubai earlier Thursday through Newark, New Jersey.

Records showed he was booked into the Essex County Jail in New Jersey on Thursday.

A warrant was issued in June for Brown on a charge of attempted murder with a firearm for the May 16 shooting outside the venue in the area of Northeast 2nd Avenue and 67th Street.

An off-duty officer working event security told investigators he left the venue after hearing about the gunfire. The same officer said he saw Brown physically fighting with another individual in the parking lot, the warrant said.

Video posted by Only in Dade showed a portion of the scuffle involving Brown and multiple other people.

The warrant cites several witnesses on the scene who identified Brown as the shooter. Officers on the scene said Brown did not have a weapon on him during a pat-down.

Investigators located two spent shell casings and an empty gun holster nearby, according to the warrant.

In a post on X after the incident, Brown said he was “jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me. Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED. I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me.”

Police said Brown will be held in New Jersey until he’s extradited to South Florida and booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail.

“This is just another example of the relentless work and dedication of Miami Police Detectives, working closely with Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Marshals to identify and arrest those who commit crimes in the City of Miami,” the department said in a statement.

Once one of the NFL’s most highly-productive receivers, Brown has a long history of troubled behavior on and off the field, including being accused by two women of sexual assault, one of whom said Brown raped her. In the 2021 season, he served a three-game suspension for misrepresenting his COVID-19 vaccination status.

He was also suspended for eight games in 2020 for multiple violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, after pleading no contest to burglary and criminal mischief charges related to a fight with a moving truck driver outside his South Florida home that year.

As for his NFL career, he finished with 928 receptions for 12,291 yards and 88 touchdowns over 12 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots and Tampa Buccaneers.

Brown was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and received four First-team All-Pro nods. He led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards multiple times during his career.
