SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Efforts are underway to help more than a thousand military families in the San Diego region who have been heavily impacted by the ongoing government shutdown.
To ease the strain on military families, Liberty Military Housing is hosting a drive-thru meal drive Thursday and Friday from 5-6 p.m. at its community services office located at 7468 Wellington Way.
Families can sign up through a lottery system and, if selected, visit the drive-thru meal drive. Liberty Military Housing will provide dinner for four and a patriotic-themed dessert.
The drive-thru meal drive kicked off on Monday and has served 250 families each night throughout the week.
According to the organization, one in six military families face a lack of access to adequate food, with about 15% who rely on food stamps and/or SNAP benefits.
This comes as the government shutdown enters its fifth week, leaving many federal employees working without a paycheck ahead of the holiday season.
In late October, the Pentagon confirmed that it had accepted an anonymous $130 million gift to help pay military service members during the shutdown.
