11/05/2025: Showers, Wind, Then a Shot of Chilly Air

The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Matt Mackie and Kevin Appleby:

An approaching storm will bring an increasing threat for showers (and later tonight, some high-elevation snow in the Greens and Adirondacks). More notably for all, however, will be a big increase in winds later today into tomorrow morning, which could lead to scattered power outages and a few downed trees. By the end of our 7-Day, temperatures will feel a bit more like early December!

Main concern for the next 24 or so hours will be the winds. Peak gusts tonight will generally top out between 50 and 60 MPH. Timing-wise, the worse of these winds look to be from about 9 PM tonight through 4 AM Thursday.

The breeze will pick up throughout Wednesday, gusting to around 35 MPH by sunset. High temperatures will top out in the 50s to near 60. While a bit of midday sun is possible, skies will generally stay on the cloudy side of things.

A High Wind Warning is in place for much of the area, Mohawk Valley-southbound for the highest potential of gusty winds. Elsewhere, the North Country is under a Wind Advisory. These warnings and advisories kick in at 7 PM tonight and are in effect through 8 AM Thursday. The wind will be the biggest, most widespread impact felt from this evening’s storm.

There will also be some showers and even a few downpours late this afternoon and through this evening. A rumble or two of thunder shouldn’t be ruled out either. The activity will become more sparse after midnight, with upslope-driven rain and snow showers persisting over the high terrain into very early Thursday morning.

As the wind kicks in and pulls in colder air, temperatures will slide back into the 30s in most areas. Wind chills will likely be in the 20s to kick off Thursday.

Winds will gradually decrease Thursday, but it will still be a bit blustery even in the afternoon. With that wind coming from the northwest, it will generate clouds, keep the temperatures on the cooler side of things, and could even spark a flurry or brief rain shower over the Catskills into the early afternoon. For most of us, Thursday is dry, brighter, and quite chilly – highs in the 40s to near 50 degrees.

Temperatures moderate a bit as we wrap up the week, with more of us above 50 by Friday. Morning sun will fade behind more afternoon cloud cover, but shower activity looks to, for the most part, hold off until after dark. A shower or two could linger into Saturday morning. A bit of PM sun ahead of yet another system should boost the numbers through the 50s, close to 60 degrees in a few spots.

Another round of showers in expected Sunday into Monday, with this system bringing in our coldest are of the season so far. That means, with lingering showers into Monday morning, even the Capital Region could see a few snowflakes from this. Accumulations will be reserved for the mountains, where several inches of snow are possible with a more prolonged period of snow Sunday night into Monday. Tuesday, meanwhile, will be downright cold – highs in the 30s to near 40 with a bit of a breeze as well!
