North Buffalo bakery hit by break-in, community shows support

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — There’s been an uptick in break-ins at local businesses across Buffalo, and a bakery in North Buffalo is the latest victim.

According to Buffalo police, someone broke into Fairy Cakes Bakeshop on Parkside Avenue in North Buffalo around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“It’s just one of those things that you never expect to happen to you until it does, and it’s utterly shocking,” said owner Nicolle Reed. “It’s so sad to see because us small businesses are here struggling to make it just as much as anyone else and it takes such a hit from us.”

The suspect smashed the front door of the bakery, damaged the point of sale system, and ran off with $200 in cash. Reed said repairs are estimated to cost around $5,000.

“We are looking at having to repair our front door and replace our full system and things like our welcome mat, our open signs,” Reed said. “The amount of repairs is going to have a huge effect. Also the setback of we’re trying to still be open, but we have plywood over our doors so it’s hard to invite customers in.”

Reed said she has received a lot of support from the community since posting about the break-in on social media.

“We’ve gotten so many messages and calls and people just checking in on us. One of our neighbors found our cash box and brought it back to us the other day, it’s been absolutely lovely. We’ve gotten an outpouring of orders and again people stopping in. It’s so appreciated, especially now more than ever,” Reed said.

She hopes the exposure will help lead police to the suspect. As of Wednesday, no suspects have been identified. Police are still investigating.
