Authorities in New Mexico say they arrested a suspect in connection with an ongoing Illinois investigation.
According to a statement from the New Mexico State Police, a license plate reader received a hit that a stolen vehicle from Illinois was on Interstate 40 in Quay County, New Mexico. The state patrol office conducted a traffic stop of the car and arrested the two people inside, a man and a juvenile male.
Police identified the suspect as Naman Alfredo Vazquez. He was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. New Mexico police said the juvenile who was in the car was released to a relative.
New Mexico police connected the suspect vehicle to what they say is an ongoing homicide investigation being conducted by the Cicero Police Department. It was on Monday, Nov. 3 that Cicero first responders discovered a middle-aged man shot to death while working to extinguish a house fire. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, the man had been shot in the head before the blaze.
Concerning the local connection, however, a Cicero police spokesperson told WGN-TV that, “Cicero police have not secured criminal charges against anyone by the name of [Naman Alfredo Vazquez]. As it relates to Monday night’s fire, detectives have identified a person of interest, but it is an ongoing investigation.”
Still, according to the statement from New Mexico State Police, Vazquez awaits extradition back to Illinois.
