Six Flags Great America closes for the 2025 season as another Six Flags park shuts down for good

Six Flags Great America, the popular Six Flags theme park in suburban Gurnee, has officially closed for the 2025 season.

“Our last day of the 2025 Season was this past Sunday, November 2,” Six Flags told NBC Chicago Tuesday. “We are looking forward to welcoming guests back in the spring and celebrating our 50th Anniversary in 2026. Lots ahead to look forward to!”

The comments come as another Six Flags park, with a similar name but in another part of the country, closes its gates for good.

Six Flags America, in Bowie, Maryland, officially shut down Sunday, Nov. 2 after 50 years. “We will always cherish the memories made together,” the park said in a Facebook post.

Six Flags president and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman announced the plans for the closure earlier this year.

“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” Zimmerman said at the time in a release.

The park property is set to be marketed for redevelopment, the release added.

In 2024, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced a $1 billion investment into its portfolio, across the brand’s 42 amusement and water parks over the next two years.

Of the investment totaling over $1 billion, more than $80 million will go towards food and beverage improvements, the company said.

In 2026, Six Flags Great America will celebrate its 50th anniversary, with the park expected to receive a new kids’ area and park enhancements, along with with commemorative events expected to be held throughout the anniversary season.
