SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish will be out for the entire 2026 season after getting elbow surgery.
Padres pitcher Yu Darvish had surgery to repair his flexor tendon on his right elbow, and had an internal brace attached to his Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) on Wednesday, Oct. 29, Darvish and San Diego Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller announced Tuesday.
The 39-year-old pitcher posted on his personal social media that he will not be able to pitch games in the 2026 season and will be working on rehabilitation to be able to throw a ball comfortably again.
MLB reports Darvish admitted to having discomfort in his elbow this past season.
His procedure was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas.
The Padres say Darvish is expected to miss the entire 2026 season as his recovery will take around 12-15 months.
Darvish is from Osaka, Japan and has been playing for Major League Baseball (MLB) since 2012 after starting in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
In the 2025 season, Darvish made 15 starts, posting a 5.38 ERA. This past season, he became the winningest pitcher of all-time across both Japan and MLB with 208 wins, according to MLB.
Darvish has had previous work on his elbow when he had to get Tommy John surgery back in 2015 and missed the entire season while pitching for Texas.
