Dozens gather in Pompano Beach to protest's ICE's raids and conditions at immigration centers

Dozens of people held a rally in Pompano Beach on Sunday to protest recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids and what they are calling “inhumane conditions” happening at immigration centers.

The rally was held outside of the Broward Transitional Center, and it was one of several protests that happened across the country as part of the Disappeared in America Weekend of Action.

NBC6 cameras captured several demonstrators who said they wanted to shed light on what they call the inhumane and cruel detention of undocumented immigrants.

“What is happening is not normal,” said a protester.

“These are human beings that are being literally taken off our streets, and it has to stop. It has to stop,” said a protester.

All these protests are part of a nationwide protest called Disappeared in America Weekend of Action.”

Several nonprofits and immigrant advocacy groups also held protests, vigils, and community prayers to highlight the impact of ICE raids and detention on families.

“It’s important to come, keep touching base with other people in the community and says we need to fight against this and there’s steps that we can take,” said a demonstrator.

It’s an issue that hits close to home for Brenda Escobar, whose husband, Yorlih Escobar-Murillo from Honduras, is being held at the Broward Transitional Center after being detained on July 3.

Brenda is currently in the hospital after giving birth to their daughter.

The hospital wrote a letter to the detention center, asking that Yorlih be released so he can be with “his partner and newborn child.”

NBC6 took a look into Yorlih’s background and only found an arrest from 2021 for driving without a license.

“I need help because I don’t know what to do,” Brenda said. “If you don’t resolve anything, being left alone and not knowing when I’m going to start working. I still have my C-section and my daughter has her surgery, and I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

NBC6 has reached out to ICE to get a response to Sunday’s protest and has also asked about Yorlih’s case.

ICE has not responded to NBC6’s inquiry.
