CORNWALL, Vt. (NEWS10) — Members of the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue team located a body Thursday afternoon while searching for a missing Middlebury College student. The body was found around 1:30 p.m. in the town of Cornwall near The Knoll, the college’s organic farm.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24 to confirm identity and determine the cause and manner of death. Vermont State Police said it does not appear the death is suspicious.
The identity will be publicly released after the autopsy.
The body was located while multiple law enforcement agencies were searching for 21-year-old Lia Smith. The California native was last seen on campus Friday night, Oct. 17 and was reported missing on Sunday, Oct. 19.
VSP, New York State Police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents from the Swanton Sector, the FBI, Middlebury College personnel, and volunteers all helped with the week’s search.
