SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN) — A proposal to merge Suncoast Polytechnical High School with Brookside Middle School is drawing pushback from students and parents.
Suncoast Polytechnical is known for its hands-on learning approach, allowing students to earn their high-school diploma while preparing for trade careers. Superintendent Terry Connor and district staff say the proposed merger would streamline resources, address low enrollment, and help protect Brookside from a charter takeover.
But some students argue the merger could disrupt specialized programs that make their campus unique.
“Could you imagine a middle schooler being in an automotive class or learning cosmetology?” said Gwendolyn Precourt, a Suncoast Polytechnical student. “I wouldn’t want a middle schooler to cut my hair.”
Students are also calling for the district to move board meetings back to 6 p.m., saying the current 10 a.m. schedule makes it harder to attend.
