Boston Weather: More rain, cool fall temperatures in coming week

Boston is in for more rain in the first half of the week, with sunny, cool weather setting in headed towards next weekend, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“It’s a fairly busy period weather wise, but nothing that’s necessarily overly active or necessarily hazardous,” said NWS lead meteorologist Andrew Loconto. “We’re going to have a couple of really strong cold frontal passages. One takes place (Monday), and then another one on Wednesday. That one on Wednesday is going to usher in a cooler and more unsettled air mass as we move into the latter part of the work week into the early part of next weekend.”

Monday is expected to kick off the week with a bout of rain as the cold front moves in around THE morning commute, Loconto said. Boston may see a thunderstorm before noon and showers throughout the day, with “heavy rainfall” possible, NWS states.

The area is also expected to get strong winds with gusts up to 31 mph, forecasts show.

“Specific to the Boston area, there’s no really significant impacts other than potentially some difficult travels are in the morning commute, just from low visibility, from a period of steady downpours for about a half hours period of time,” said Loconto.

High temperatures in the mid-60s are likely Monday and Tuesday, according to forecasts, with nighttime lows in the upper 40s and low 50s.

Tuesday is expected to be the “pick of the week,” Loconto said. Skies are set to clear briefly before the rain returns in the early hours Wednesday, forecasts show.

“Wednesday, we have another cold front that’s coming in, and it probably will be similar in terms of what impacts we’ll see,” Loctonto said. “Just again, rain in the morning that could produce some difficult travel for morning commuters.”

Wednesday is forecast to see showers and possible thunderstorms throughout the day in the Boston area, NWS states. The high is expected to remain in the mid-60s Wednesday, with a low dipping into the mid-40s.

Skies are expected to remain sunny Thursday heading into the weekend. Stronger chilly winds are also forecast throughout the day, with gusts up to 21 mph. Thursday is expected to see a high in the low 60s and a low in the low 40s.

“It should be dry most of the time, looking at Thursday and Friday, but I couldn’t rule out there being a spot shower at worst,” said Loconto. “But the vast majority of the Commonwealth will end up being dry.”

Friday through the weekend, temperatures are preliminarily expected to drop to highs in the upper 50s about about five degrees cooler than normal, Loconto said, and chillier lows in the low 40s.
