Dollar General agrees to pay $400K fine for 'overcharging' at Colorado registers

DENVER (KDVR) — Dollar General and Colorado’s attorney general have reached a settlement agreement after an investigation found the company was allegedly not providing accurate pricing of its products at its registers.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced on Thursday in a press release that Dollar General has agreed to pay a $400,000 settlement fine, along with implementing increased reporting requirements due to products at the company’s registers allegedly being more than the prices listed on shelves.

According to the press release, the Colorado Department of Agriculture conducts regular inspections at Colorado retailers to “ensure pricing accuracy.” Stores that fail the inspections are due to shelf prices being different from the price at the register, which is more than 2%.

CDA had conducted five inspections in 2023 at Dollar General stores in Weld and Larimer counties, where the company had allegedly failed three of those inspections, the press release said. The Colorado Attorney General’s Office in 2024 and 2025 conducted its own inspections at the company’s various locations in the state, with 12 out of 18 inspections failing.

“When shoppers are going to the store, they are entitled to pay the price at the cash register that they see on shelves,” said Weiser in the press release. “In this case, Dollar General was telling their customers that they would be charged one price and actually charging them another, and I am now holding them accountable for this wrongful conduct. I will always fight for the rights of Colorado consumers and work to make sure they are treated fairly by businesses.”

The press release said Dollar General, in addition to the $400,000 fine, will also have posted signs at its locations telling customers it will honor the lowest product prices “in the event of any discrepancy,” along with price audits during the next three years at its Colorado stores.
